A British man has been found dead in western Libya, along with a woman from New Zealand.
The bodies were found near a gas and oil complex in Mellitah. Reports from the Libyan security services suggested they were shot.
A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the tragic death of a Briton in Libya and we stand ready to provide consular assistance."
It has been reported that the pair were workers at Mellitah Oil and Gas.
Mellitah is near the town of Zuwarah, 60 miles (100km) west of Tripoli.
A separate report claiming that the British man was a teacher was not correct, the Press Association said.
The belongings of the two victims were apparently untouched and the motive for the killings remains unclear.
The security source said: "Their bodies were found near the coastal area of Mellitah."
The area is home to a large oil and gas complex co-owned by Italian company ENI.
The killings come a month after a US teacher was shot dead in the eastern city of Benghazi, after which the Foreign Office said further attacks against Westerners were likely and could be opportunistic.
