Two bodies have been recovered in a search for three missing kayakers in Northumberland.

Police were alerted when the men, from the South Shields area, failed to return home on Sunday after going kayaking in Hexham.

It sparked a major search operation, involving police, fire crews and a Sea King rescue helicopter.

One body was recovered from the river at Riding Mill, and a second in the Corbridge area. The search continues.

Police located one of the missing men's vehicles near to Hexham Rowing Club just before 01:15 BST, and a second one three hours later at Wylam train station car park.

The first body was recovered at 05:00 and the second at 06:20. Formal identification is yet to take place.

Northumbria Police said that the men had planned their trip and knew that stretch of the river well.

Ch Supt Gordon Milward said: "The weather was unpredictable, in terms of some very heavy showers and the river was higher than usual and fast-flowing.

"They would be challenging conditions for anybody who decided to go into the water."

The police's marine unit, other emergency service personnel and the RAF have been joined by specialists from Northumberland Search and Rescue.

Ch Supt Milward added: "There is a considerable length of the river we need to search.

"We need to do so speedily, properly and thoroughly and make sure no nook and cranny is missed.

"It's about that balance between speed and thoroughness."
