The jury in the phone-hacking trial has been discharged after failing to reach verdicts on outstanding charges against former News of the World editor Andy Coulson and journalist Clive Goodman.

Coulson was convicted of conspiracy to hack phones on Tuesday. Goodman had pleaded guilty in 2006 over hacking.

The pair faced further allegations of conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office.

A decision on any retrial would be made on Monday, the judge said.

He had considered halting proceedings earlier after Coulson's lawyer criticised Prime Minster David Cameron's "ill-advised and premature intervention" in the case.

Mr Cameron issued a hasty apology on Tuesday for employing the former tabloid editor as his communications chief.

Five people have pleaded guilty in the case, while former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks and her husband Charlie were among the remaining defendants cleared on Tuesday.
